Your baby’s First Hair Cut – Before

Published on September 9, 2016

For parents, to get the child’s first hair cut would be an absolute momentous occasion but the average toddler, is however unlikely to be enthusiastic. For this preschooler, being wrapped in a cape, sprayed with water, and attacked with scissors would give a stranger anxiety experience. A tot is typically nervous and uneasy in the face of any new experience. You have to divide the preparation into two parts, one is few days before the haircut and two is during the haircut.

Before the haircut:

When to go: Some children are born with luscious curly hair and might need a trimming as early as 8 months. While others might not need it until they turn 2.

Note – Keep in mind that once you cut off those curls, they may not grow back. On the other hand, trimming superfine baby hair often makes it look thicker.

Familiarise them: Talk to the child about how much fun it will be and tell her how good he/she is going to look after the trimming. Have your child watch how it’s done or even better – let him/her play with a spray bottle and pretend to trim his bangs with your fingers.

If your child is old enough – like a kindergarten student or a preschool going one, read books about the subject or watch videos together.

Use the right vocabulary: Avoid using the word “cut,” which may scare your child – use ‘snip’ or ‘trim’ or ‘spruce up’ instead. Chances are, the associations your child has with the word “cut” will make him understand that it will hurt to cut your hair just like it hurts to have a cut on your finger.

Choose the right place: Choose a salon that knows how to deal with child haircut. Many kids’ hair places have videos to keep little kids entertained. Else call a barber who’s especially good with kids – someone who is an expert and patient.

Plan it right: Schedule it for soon after a nap or a meal. Don’t hesitate to reschedule if your child seems out of sorts that day.
